The Old Fashioned whisky cocktail dates back to the 19th century. It was served with a small piece of ice and lemon peel, and mixed with a small bar-spoon. By the 1860s, cocktail fans found themselves craving a return to simpler cocktails. While the recipe evolved slightly from the original, it was from this point onward referred to as “old-fashioned” and a legend was born.

A prerequisite for a good Old Fashioned is a good whisky. The best rye whisky for an Old Fashioned should have a deep amber or copper hue that is pleasing to the eye, and a flavour profile that leans towards notes of spice, caramel, and marmalade that are accentuated by the orange oils in the peel.
