What is whisky neat?
The whisky world loves our own little language. And while it might sound impressive, to walk into a bar and ask for a "whisky neat", more often than not, it can feel like you need a thesaurus to know how to order your favourite whisky your way. We don't believe in that kind of whisky.
In the simplest way: neat means all spirit, no mix.
Yes, there are some technicalities between the definitions, and while we hate to give more weight to the "secret world of whisky", it's better to arm you with knowledge so that you can order your favourite Forty Creek Whisky just the way you like it.
While it is often used interchangeably with "straight", N.E.A.T. specifically refers to the glass, which shapes and squeezes lighter ethanol molecules out of its opening and keeps heavier molecules within. NEAT literally stands for Naturally Enhanced Aroma Technology. To get even more confusing, while some people might think "straight up" would describe the same style of preparation, any cocktail "up" actually instructs your bartender to chill the spirit first by mixing it with ice and straining it into your class.
We're a lot less strict: Forty Creek whisky neat is simply 2 ounces of our favourite whisky served without any additional flavour or dilution. This is the perfect way to experience all of the different flavours, finishes, and nuances of our whiskies.
How to Drink Whisky Neat
If
you're just starting your whisky journey, there is no shame in having some ice on the side and trying both “Whisky Neat” and “Whisky on the Rocks”. Once you've had your first few sips neat, you can add the rocks and see how this changes the flavours from cooling down the spirit to eventually adding some dilution. Sip slowly and savour.
